We are thrilled to introduce you to the work of Montreal-based quilter and textile artist Jordan St. James, whose practice combines the threads of heritage, innovation, identity, queerness and emotion. As the inaugural exhibition at our gallery, this show - aptly titled DEBUT - invites you to step into a world where the artist’s hands meet the machine, and the past informs the future. Jordan St. James' work is a dynamic tapestry of modern storytelling, sustainability, and cultural exploration - each piece a testament to his unique blend of traditional quilting techniques and innovative craftsmanship.

Jordan St. James is a textile artist whose practice spans the centuries-old craft of quilting with the contemporary tools of modern design. A foundation in traditional quilting techniques has been the launchpad for his evolution into a multifaceted artist who explores the intersection of manual and digital craftsmanship. His artistic process is a unique dialogue between the tactile and the imaginary. He begins with digital sketches and designs, using open-source software to create intricate patterns and textures. These designs are then realized through a blend of traditional quilting, custom fabric printing, and hand-stitched elements. His use of technology is not just a tool but a narrative component, allowing for complex, layered storytelling that speaks to the digital age while honoring traditional craftsmanship.

The work is characterized by its vibrant use of color, innovative materials, and a deep exploration of themes that range from personal narratives to environmental and social consciousness. St. James’ pieces can be described as “textile fairytales” – each quilt, tapestry, or textile installation telling a story that is both deeply personal and universally relatable, if not sometimes controversial (hopefully).

During the exhibit, the gallery will host an artist talk and community discussions to delve deeper into themes of identity, sustainability, and the evolving role of textiles in modern art and society.
